Florence Marie (Hughes) Alkire

Florence Marie (Hughes) Alkire, 100, of Coraopolis, PA, formerly of Uniontown, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 14, 2024. She was born June 18, 1923 in Dunbar, PA.

Preceding her in death were her parents, James Madison and Nellie (Welling) Hughes, husband, Maurice Wayne Alkire, and six siblings, Jay D. Hughes, Donald R. Hughes, Raleigh Hughes, Mel Hughes, Frances E. Early, and Shirley Hughes.

Florence was a Tax Specialist for the IRS, Special Procedures Staff in Seattle, WA, for 41 years, member of the Sun Lakes Baptist Church in Sun Lakes, Oregon, the Eastern Star in Seattle, WA, and loved to golf. She served Honorably in the US Navy Waves from July 15, 1943 to February 26, 1946, was an auxiliary member of the VFW, and was proud to serve as Grand Marshall of the Dunbar Memorial Day parade.

Surviving are a sister, Delores Jean Meintzer of Apopka, FL, a special nephew, who was like a brother to her, Donnie Hughes (Carol) of Coraopolis, PA, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the Shell Funeral Home, Inc., 164 S. Mt. Vernon Ave., Uniontown, PA on Sunday, May 19th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, and on Monday, May 20th, until 11 AM the hour of service with Pastor Joseph Ritz officiating. Entombment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, PA. Military Honors will be accorded by Amvets General Marshall Post 103.
